Some interesting facts about “Honest” Abe:

☞ Married into a rich family that owned more than 500 slaves
☞ Snuck into Washington for fear of an attempt on his life
☞ Went to war without Congress
☞ Declared martial law and suspended the writ of habeus corpus
☞ Threatened state judges with federal troops
☞ Imprisoned thousands of Northern citizens without trial
☞ Instituted conscription: forced military service, i.e., slavery
☞ Arrested and imprisoned newspaper publishers
☞ Seized telegraph lines and censored all communications
☞ Created several new states without the consent of the people that lived there
☞ Ordered Federal troops to interfere with elections in the North
☞ Deported a member of Congress for an anti-war speech he viewed as criticism
☞ Massive territory expansion with removal of Indigenous people from their homelands, marched out under military escort, then starved and left to die
☞ Nationalized the Railroads, forcing more Native Americans from their lands
☞ Oversaw the largest mass execution in US history - mostly Indigenous people responding to treatment
☞ Internment camps for both Native and Confederate soldiers
☞ Reversed a subordinate’s Emancipation Order that freed 100k slaves - only to make his own Emancipation declaration months later (which did not apply to Union States)
☞ Vocal about his intent on removing all non-whites from the continent. For peace!
